Year 6 students head to Canberra for trip

June 2016

Year 6 students Geraldton Grammar School recently flew to Canberra for an educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $260 per student under the

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

I was lucky enough to attend the Year 6 camp to Canberra during Week 8.  I would like to thank the year 6’s for representing the school with pride at the many venues we visited, and the staff; Mrs Carroll, Mrs Mundy, Mr McKenzie and Mr Matthews, for their support and professionalism while away.

There were many highlights including visits to the Australian War Memorial, where we were lucky enough to lay a wreath at the tomb of the ‘Unknown Soldier’, the old and new Parliament House, the Australian Institute of Sport where we saw the men’s volleyball team training for the Olympics, Questacon and the National Gallery. The weather, while a little brisk in the morning and evenings, was kind to us most days. For many students there were a few firsts, including; flying, visiting Canberra and being away from home for an extended period. We were proud of how brave they were at accepting these challenging firsts.

I’m sure all students have many stories, and a wealth of knowledge, they can share with others, and experiences they will share as a group for many years to come.
